About the In Lakech Project

Rooted in “In Lak’ech Ala K’in” — I am you, and you are me , our story is one of connection, compassion, and shared humanity.

Our Story

The In Lakech Project began as an act of love. When longtime NICU nurse Tara Shields, RN visited Mahahual, Mexico in 2006, she formed a deep connection to the community. After a hurricane devastated the town, Tara was moved to act — and that small act of compassion grew into a movement rooted in In Lak’ech Ala K’in (“I am you, and you are me”).

Who We Are

Community-Led

Everything we do begins with listening. We work with communities, not just for them — ensuring that every initiative reflects the voices, culture, and priorities of the people it serves. By empowering local leadership, we turn shared ideas into sustainable impact.

Holistic

We see the whole person, body, mind, and spirit, and the whole community they belong to. Our approach integrates education, wellness, and cultural growth, recognizing that true change happens when every part of life is nurtured and connected.

Inclusive

We embrace all people, identities, and experiences. Our spaces are built on respect and belonging, where every story matters and every person is valued. Through inclusion, we create communities that are stronger, more compassionate, and truly connected.

Our Values

At In Lakéch Project, our values guide everything we do. We begin with respect — listening to and honoring the dignity of every person we meet. We believe in reciprocity, where giving and receiving flow in balance, creating shared growth and connection. Through empowerment, we help individuals and communities lead with confidence and purpose. And above all, we act with authenticity, staying true to our mission, our word, and the spirit of In Lakéch — “I am you, and you are me.”

Our Mission

Our mission is to build connection through compassion and action. We create spaces where education, culture, and community come together to inspire growth and belonging. By meeting people where they are and walking beside them as they rise, we help turn care into impact and empathy into lasting change. At In Lakéch Project, every effort reflects our belief that when one person is uplifted, we all are — because I am you, and you are me.
